Using IPMI to monitor / manage hardware and provide remote access

The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) is a generic interface that administrators can use to monitor server hardware locally or remotely. The IPMI interface allows applications that support the standard to provide data center wide monitoring, management and remote access to servers.

IPMI allows management and monitoring of system temperatures, voltages, fan rpms, chassis intrusion, and hardware logs. Servers can be power on/off and remote console access can be provided.

Many enterprise class servers have IPMI network interfaces built into the server. If your server doesn’t contain an IPMI interface, it can be added by installing an IPMI network interface card.

Open source examples of IPMI tools are xCAT or ipmitool.
